Implementation of bowel ultrasound practice for the diagnosis and management of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among premature infants. Increasing data suggest that bowel ultrasound may be useful in the diagnosis and management of NEC. There is a need to promote education and training for sonographers and radiologists for using bowel ultrasound. This manuscript suggests a roadmap for including bowel ultrasound in routine practice.
Simulation-Based Structured Education Supports Focused Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound Training. Brain injury in preterm neonates may cause clinical deterioration and requires timeous bedside diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness and feasibility of training non-radiologist care-provides in cranial ultrasound evaluation. Forty-five participants were satisfactorily trained in a prospective interventional educational study of a 2-day training workshop with didactic and hands-on interactive sessions using computer-based and 3-dimensional printed phantom simulators. The skills were retained after 3 and 6 months.
Neuroimaging Patterns and Function in Cerebral Palsy-Application of an MRI Classification. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a heterogeneous disorder of movement and posture. The MRI classification system (MRICS), developed by the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE), is a reliable way to classify MRI patterns. This study applied MRICS on data from 3,818 children (1999-2009) who had CP and a post-neonatal MRI. Intellectual impairment, active epilepsy, visual impairment, and hearing impairment were documented in an impairment index. Bilateral MRI findings were associated with a more severe outcome both regarding motor impairment and associated impairments than unilateral compromise. These results might support early counseling and service planning of support of children with CP.
